about leonardo da vinci
Leonardo was born in 1452 in the small Florentine town of Vinci (where he gets his last name from-- to call him Da Vinci is a misnomer) to a notary and peasant. Though he was an illegitimate child, he was fortunate to be educated in the studio of first Verrocchio and then Ludovico il Moro.It is clear that Leonardo is one of the true geniuses of the Renaissance and indeed all time. He was more than just an artist. Leonardo was an inventor, engineer, scientist, and musician among other things. It is his art that he is well known for, though. Leonardo was very inventive with his artistic procedure, using techniques of sfumato (a well known element of the Mona Lisa) and paint methods (such as the technique he tried on the Last Supper, which is unfortunately fading).
